Recovery may be far off for Samsung unit
Article Abstract:
Prices of Samsung Electronics Co. shares continue to decline because of falling global market prices for memory chips. Home electronics appliances account for 30% while chips and personal computers comprise 58% of the company's sales. Memory chip prices fell from $50 at the end of 1995 to $10 per unit in the early part of 1997. Stock prices are not expected to recover even in 1998 also because of increased competition from other home appliance makers.

Alphatec may hold key to Thailand's future: proposed restructuring deal for computer firm could boost confidence
Article Abstract:
Thailand economic observers are anticipating the outcome of Price Waterhouse's restructuring plan for Alphatec Electronics' $375 mil debt, which is expected to become a landmark economic case study in Thailand. The restructuring plan is expected to take the form of new capital investments into the company by several equity investors, notable among which is the American International Group. Economic observers believe that the rescue will be a better option for creditors, since the company faces better prospects in the international market with the low price of its computer chips.
