Since United States interest rates have been cut 5 times, investors are looking to the Philippines, with its political and economic volatility, as a source for high-risk high-yield bonds. Analysts believe that if president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo wins control of the Senate, the economic outlook for the Philippines has the potential to get progressively better because of Arroyo's initiatives that cut down the Philippine budget and promote deregulation.

Hunt for leads in attacks spreads to Southeast Asia
Article Abstract:
Radical Islamic groups in Southeast Asia will come under intense scrutiny as the investigation into the September 11 terrorist attacks continues. The United States Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, wasd closed on September 12 due to concern that an attack was being planned by an Islamic group linked to Osama bin Laden. Investigators are also evaluating leads in the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Piltel merger talk elicits analysts' caution on stock; possible debt-restructuring deal with sector leader could take months to cement

Retail investors wanting to ride on rumors circulating about the merger deal between Pilipino Telephone (Piltel) and Smart Communications should beware and should stay away instead. Pacific Asia Capital Managing Dir James Donovan warns that the merger could still be months in the making. PLDT Pres and First Pacific Dir Manuel Pangilinan has given assurances that Piltel will receive the support of both PLDT and First Pacific. Pangilinan ruled out the outright merger between Smart and Piltel although some operational merger could be enforced.
