Amato's brave start

Prime Minister Giuliano Amato has begun to reform Italy's economy by starting to dismantle the expensive national pension system. He is also beginning to privatize state-owned companies. This will be slow and it may fail as other reform efforts have failed before.

Amato's economic reforms should help Italy's economy but they have been stalled in parliament. His spending cuts on health and pensions were just approved but his plans for privatisation were not. The lire was devalued by 7% Sep 13 as economic decline continued.
