American Home shares sink on verdict

American Home Products Corp.'s share value declined by 12% on August 5, 1999 following a Texas jury's decision. The jury ordered the company to pay over $23 million (21.4 million euros) in damages to a female who experienced damage to her heart valve after using the Pondimin diet drug. The jury decision was the first time that a jury in a diet drug case involving American Home came to a verdict.
