There is growing sentiment to end affirmative action in the US, and the time for its demise has come. It does more to perpetuate racism than to eliminate it, and does little to help poor urban blacks who need it most. The strict enforcement of discrimination law is all that is needed now.

The Federal Trade Commission threatened to block Staple's proposal to buy Office Depot, arguing that the merged company would have unfair advantages. But falling prices in the office-products market indicates that the competitive influence of superstores goes far beyond niche markets.

The telecommunications deregulation bill has resulted in a spate of radio station acquisitions, as old rules that limited the number of stations a company could own have been abolished. Advertising revenues in radio have been growing very quickly.
