Dancing in the dark: a major shake-up bolsters the military - and Kimg Jong II
Article Abstract:
There are significant power changes in North Korea following deaths, defections and disappearances in the Old Guard. Kim Jong II, North Korean leader, could now reinforce his power over the armed forces which he sees as critical to his power base. Kim is trying to control internal security in the face of worsening food shortages and and increasing disaffection following the defection of Hwang Jang Yop. The stance on the issues of food shortages, peace talks with the US and coexistence with the south is uncertain.

Thailand's press and pro-democracy groups are concerned about friction between Defense Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and Army Commander Gen Wimol Wongwanich over the promotion of a general who ordered demonstrators shot in 1992. Wimol wants to give Gen Chainarong Noonpakdi one of the army's top five positions, and Chavalit, at pains to appear publicly close to Wimol, opposes the move. The real fear is of another military coup, which the army insists will not happen.

China's first modern dance company, The Guangdong Modern Dance Company founded by Yang Mei Qi in 1992, is subject to state regulations. The Guangdong authorities are more liberal than those in Beijing, but regulations to be met include those governing the promotion of Chinese culture and traditions. The troupe is developing its own style, which members do not wish to define as Chinese, but which is influenced by the individuals' internal Chinese culture.
