An aged Suharto is both the nation's lock and key
Article Abstract:
Indonesian President Suharto's decision to seek a seventh five-year term in March 1998 may frustrate efforts to recover from its harshest economic crisis in 32 years. Numerous Indonesians as well as several foreign investors and creditors are concerned that Suharto may not be able to enforce mandated reforms that are part of the International Monetary Fund's $33 bil bailout. However, some analysts deem that Suharto, considering his power over the armed forces and bureaucracy, may be the sole figure that is capable of carrying out the strict measures required to save the economy and sustain order.

How a Suharto endgame could possibly play out
Article Abstract:
The endgame of protests against the Suharto administration could either bring about a coup similar to the Supersemar that ousted Pres Sukarno or Suharto's resignation. Rioting, looting and burning have escalated and the question facing the Suharto administration is how and when is the president leaving. Resignation would automatically elevate Suharto's VP to president but the rioting could call for the military to intervene in some way or another in the selection process.
