Thais rethink the notions of globalization and progress
Article Abstract:
Thais, confronted with the economic crisis, are beginning to rethink their notions of globalization with some interesting points emerging. Some have proposed increased dependence on Asian neighbors, monetary union and self-reliance. Moreover, anti-US sentiments have emerged due to the US economic boom that has left many Asian out in the cold. Businesses are looking towards India and China to provide insight into what could be done as these economies have escaped the currency turmoil in Asia.

Thai economic cabinet approves plan to develop competitive banking system
Article Abstract:
Thailand's economic cabinet has approved a five-year master plan which seeks to turn the country into a regional financial hub by the year 2000. The plan includes setting up futures, derivatives and options markets and greater regulatory oversight to guarantee financial stability. It also includes the granting of five new banking licenses to local companies and five to seven banking licenses to foreign banks.

Thai reforms fail to excite: but foreign-stake change lifts interest in banks
Article Abstract:
Investors remain pessimistic despite the Thai government's announcement of a financial restructuring package. Investors are dissapointed over the absence of tough loan-loss-provisioning and capital requirements for financial firms in the package. However, the announcement that foreigners can now buy a controlling stake in any Thai financial institutions was given little notice.
