A challenger everyone needs
Article Abstract:
The victory of John McCain in New Hampshire could have a major effect on the Republican party. His policies include modest tax cuts with some of the planned budget surplus to be used to strengthen the Social Security system. He has mentioned health care reform and is the only Republican to do so. The presidential contest is less predictable following McCain's victory in New Hampshire. There is some chance that he could also gain a victory in South Carolina. The direction of the Republican party willbe affected by the choice of candidate.

Super Tuesday, Ash Wednesday
Article Abstract:
George W Bush and Al Gore have become the contenders for the presidency for the Republican and Democratic parties respectively. John McCain and Bill Bradley are out of the race, but both Gore and Bush have yet to prove themselves attractive to people who do not traditionally support their parties. Turnout has risen, and a new political center is emerging, which opposes conservative views on social issues, though not on other policy issues. John McCain has appeal for this new center, and another appeal may be made to this new political constituency.
