The end for Kohl's heir-apparent
Article Abstract:
German Christian Democrat leader, Wolfgang Schauble, has resigned his post of party chairman over a financing scandal. He may be replaced by general secretary, Angela Merkel. The party faces serious financial problems and loss of electoral support. Merkel is seen as offering a way to break with the past, though there are concerns that she may lack sophistication and weight compared with Schauble. There are arguments that the Christian Democrats are needed for democracy in Germany.

A kaleidoscope in motion
Article Abstract:
There are political allegiances on geographical lines in Germany, where the south tends to be dominated by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU). The Social Democrats are stronger in the north. The state government is also dominated by the Social Democrats. The CDU has been affected by decline since it was defeated in elections in 1998, but the CSU is seeking to expand its influence, while the Greens are also gaining power.

Getting the blues
Article Abstract:
The German Green Party has three ministers in government, but faces a problem of poor morale and a poor showing in municipal and regional elections. Some members of the party argue that it should leave Germany's coalition government, but they have problems which pre-date the coalition, such as weak leadership, poor organization and outdated policies. Some of the party's rules prevent strong leadership, as part of its anti-authoritarian stance.
