The contender
Article Abstract:
John McCain is a presidential candidate seeking the Republican nomination who has performed better than George W Bush in the New Hampshire primary. He is a strong contrast to President Bill Clinton, and talks easily about principles and self-sacrifice, while seeking to reform campaign funding. He favors deregulation and opposes abortion. He puts less emphasis on tax cuts than does Bush, aiming to strengthen Social Security and repay government debt, with the remainder of a forecast surplus to be used for a tax cut.

An elephant never forgives, they say
Article Abstract:
John McCain has little support among fellow senators for his campaign to become Republican presidential candidate. The conservative faction of the party is also hostile to McCain, on the whole. There is concern about his views on campaign finance, which could have a major impact on US politics. McCain has criticized colleagues on his website. Bush was seen as a way of bringing change without revolution, but this hope has been undermined by McCain. Republicans are concerned that the main candiate could abe adversely affected, and the shock may not be enough to bring new life to the party.
