The ancient Indian holy city of Varanasi is one of the most popular destinations for both local and foreign tourists. Located along the west bank of the Ganges River, Varanasi was visited by over 100,000 people in 1995 alone. Travelers can take a dawn boat ride from Assi Ghat to Raj Ghat while viewing the many ancient temples along the banks. The 3,000-year-old city is also renowned throughout India for its elaborate saris and intricate embroidery.

Solo, Indonesia, became the target for unbridled rioters who regarded the city as a symbol of Suharto cronyism. Suharto has just relinquished his powers to a new president. The city received special treatment from the Suharto government since it is the hometown of Suharto's deceased wife. There are fears that Suharto's departure and the damage caused by the riots may have a permanent effect on the city.
