Ancient Mustang faces a new invasion
Article Abstract:
Mustang, an ancient kingdom in northern Nepal, was opened to foreign trekkers for the first time in 1990 by Nepal's Ministry of Tourism. A limit on how many tourists could visit Mustang each year was meant to guard against environmental damage, while a fee of $500 per tourist, increased to $1,000 in 1993, was meant to benefit the region's indigenous people, the Lobars. Unfortunately, little of this money has reached the Lobars. Other problems, such as illegal tourism and the theft or sale of irreplaceable antiquities, make Mustang an example of tourism's often injurious impact on Asia.
