Democratic reform in Indonesia has been postponed in spite of its economic past growth. The present economic crisis may be the catalyst that brings political reforms. Pres Suharto and his family have had a strangle-hold on the economy, enriching themselves. But a change may be coming.

Why pagodas don't fall down

Japan's wooden pagodas have withstood earthquakes aned typhoons for hundreds of years. Modern architects marvel at the extraordinary sturdiness of these narrow structures and are not certain why they have held up so well. Pagoda design is discussed.

The Smithsonian Institution has elected to cancel its planned exhibition that would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. The exhibition is being canceled because of political pressure and protests by former military personnel.
