Czechoslovakia existed until 1993, when it was divided into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The two countries remain similar in many ways, but the Czech Republic has the stronger economy and has been invited to join NATO. Slovakia is generally associated with the countries of Eastern Europe.

Czechoslovakia appears to be the latest nation destined to break up into separate sovereign states. The Czechs and Slovaks have reached a preliminary agreement to split the country, although it leaves the door open for the country to remain in existence as a loose federation.
