Angola facing war and hunger
Article Abstract:
Farmers are being forced to leave their lands in Angola by rebel soldiers from UNITA, and this means that famine is a real danger. The World Food Program is providing aid, which is staving off starvation, but the rebels aim to use starvation as a way of encouraging the population to oppose the government. Seed corn is being consumed and new crops cannot be planted. The government's funds are taken up with the civil war, and aid donors are left to tackle the problem of hunger. There appears little chance of negotiations between the two sides, and the rebels can make Angola ungovernable.

On and on, they fight
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) has withdrawn its mission that sought to supervise a return to peace in Angola. The two sides have instead rearmed, and fighting has broken out again, causing farmers to abandon the countryside. The leader of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi, is thought to want the population to crowd into the cities, and rise up against the government due to desperate conditions there, yet there is greater fear of Savimbi than of the government. The countryside is controlled by UNITA, and a stalemate has emerged.
