Angola on the way to war
Article Abstract:
Angola appears to be moving toward war. UNITA, led by Jonas Savimbi, does not appear to wish to abide by a peace agreement of 1994. Villages are first attacked by UNITA forces, and then retaken by government forces. Survivors are then seen as UNITA sympathisers, and are effectively attacked twice. The government also failed to secure peace through providing education and health care. After the 1994 agreement, police were sent instead to execute those suspected of helping UNITA. Meanwhile, the United Nations mission has lost its leader seeking to tackle the problem. Alioune Blondin Beye died in a plane crash in Jun 1998.

War, again: Angola
Article Abstract:
The civil war has resumed in Angola two years after a peace agreement was signed. The resumption of the fighting seems to have occurred because rebel leader Jonas Savimbi refuses to accept his defeat in the Sep 1992 elections. He claims the voting was rigged.
