Behind the murk in Angola
Article Abstract:
It seems uncertain whether the United Nations will be able to revive peace talks between Angola's MPLA government and UNITA rebels. The government has been broadcasting hostile propaganda against UNITA, thus technically breaching the 1994 Lusaka peace agreement and attracting criticism from the United Nations and the US. Angola is now technically at the end of the peace process, but little real progress has been made. UNITA continues to take land, while the government has pushed itself to the point of self-destruction.

Angola asunder
Article Abstract:
The reemergence of civil war in Angola would also trigger the end of a truce in Mozambique. Both countries disbanded and unified rival armies before holding elections. But armies in Angola created only a semblance of disbanding, and election results have been close.

The United Nations is experiencing some success in its efforts to bring peace to civil-war-torn Angola. Rebel leader Joseph Savimbi has agreed to talk to UN representative Alione Blondin Beye. The UN hopes that food-relief efforts can soon start up again.
