Aral controls 10% of the Czech fuel market
Article Abstract:
Aral CR (Prague, Czech Republic), fuel distributor, now controls 10% of the Czech fuel market, having operated on it for 10 years. The company has 63 service stations in the country, 3% of the total number. Apart from fuel sales, the company also operates autoshops and is involved in the fuel oils and lubricants sector. Aral CR is part of Aral (Germany), which also operates in Hungary, Poland and Slovakia within Central and Eastern Europe, planning to go on expanding in the region. It intends to build other service stations, primarily in Poland, having a total of 460 in the countries at present. Aral is part of the power concern E.ON (Germany).

PKN wants to expand
Article Abstract:
PKN (Poland), petroleum group, intended to acquire the refinery in Leuna, Germany, in early 2001. The company planned to buy 50% of shares in the refinery from TotalFinaElf (France) for USD 1 bil to gain control over 230 petrol stations in eastern Germany and 33 in the Czech Republic. It withdrew from the project but it wants to expand abroad. The fuel retail market in southern Poland is endangered by the acquisition of Slovnaft (Slovakia) by the petrochemical company MOL (Hungary), which happened in 2000.

Benzina SP starts liquidation
Article Abstract:
Benzina SP (Prague, Czech Republic), state fuel distribution company, started a liquidation process in May 2001. A reason for the liquidation is a CEK 651 M tax in arrears and a consequent penalty of CEK 2.2 bn the firm owes to the Finance Ministry of the Czech Republic. According to analysts, the state can get CEK 400 M at the most for the saleable part of Benzina SP.
