Architect in the House: after 33 years as the only architect MP, Sydney Chapman relishes the prospect of a period in opposition
Article Abstract:
Sydney Chapman has been MP for the London constituency of Chipping Barnet since 1979. He is also an architect, but has not practised since the 1960s. He studied architecture and town planning at Manchester University, later practising for just three years, and then teaching architectural history and town planning law. He has an interest in the environment and sponsored a private members's bill increasing protection of listed buildings and trees. He held the senior post of whip for six years.

Jorge Wilheim is the organiser of the Habitat II United Nations conference on human settlements. Wilheim has lived and worked in Brazil and designed Sao Paulo's convention hall and conference centre. He has worked in 20 cities as a planner, and masterplanned the expansion of Curitiba. Habitat II is aimed at persuading governments to review their urban policies.

A gender for change: Mary Bowman, an associate at Foster's and project architect for the Bilbao Metro, has strong views on opportunities for women architects

Mary Bowman is the project architect for Foster's Bilbao Metro system. Bowman believes that the company structures and hierarchies in architectural practices put women off coming into architecture. She also feels that women are not given the opportunities early on in their careers to allow them to prosper in the profession.
