Are national stereotypes discriminating?
Article Abstract:
Managers hold sterotyped views of their counterparts from other nations, as is revealed in a survey of European managers. UK managers tend to hold a more positive opinion of themselves than managers of other nations hold of UK managers. Spanish managers tend to be seen as lacking punctuality, reliability, efficiency and the ability to work hard. Punctuality is seen as important by German managers while Germans tend to rate themselves as low on humor. Stereotypes can affect selection of suppliers and partners, and greater attention to punctuality and negotiating styles can help combat stereotypes.

Culture, community and networks: the hidden cost of outsourcing
Article Abstract:
Outsourcing has become increasingly popular as a means of cutting costs and allowing companies to focus on core activities. This practice has become fashionable and is linked to political ideology. Managers may lose sight of costs associated with outsourcing such as loss of loyalty, a sense of community, and informal systems of communication which facilitate learning. This can leave companies vulnerable, and they should seek to achieve a balance in order for outsourcing not to become damaging.
