Armenia privatises steppe by steppe
Article Abstract:
Armenia's government had an outstanding debt of $68 million owned to the International Monetary Fund in 1996, but privatisation of state companies will encourage foreign investment and lower the deficit. State owned telephone firm Armentel was put up for sale in 1997, and several serious offers have been received. Electricity firm Armenergo will also be privatised and the sale is being handled by the World Bank. International funding groups see Armenia's committment to privatisation as tangible evidence of creating economic stability for its population of 3.7 million people.

Steady market for project finance deals
Article Abstract:
Plans for the privatisation of many public utilities and state-owned enterprises around the world have been affected by the economic crisis in Asia. Many projects in the Asia Pacific region are suspended, although South Korea has permitted foreign investors to own airports, railways and public facilities for 99 years providing they build them first. Privatisations of the power sector are still happening in Taiwan, China and Central and Eastern Europe. Nuclear testing has affected investments in India and Pakistan. Investors in Latin America are being very selective.
