The lackluster interest demonstrated in the proposed privatization of Banco di Napoli does not bode well for Italy. The banking industry has many examples of poor management and a lack of capitalization, and if Banco di Napoli is purchased by another state-owned bank, nothing will likely change.

Article Abstract:
There has been no widespread collapse of the banking system since the Great Depression era, however there have been isolated cases of failure, and banks in the 1990s are undertaking greater risks with less regulation. One suggested solution involves a more narrow approach to banking.

Private ideas for public policy
Article Abstract:
Several proposals to privatize or reduce the amount of banking regulation and deposit insurance are evaluated. One idea is to have banks cross-guarantee each other. Another plan would split banks into narrow, low risk ones, and wide, high risk ones.
