Art and power symposium teaches us not to forget
Article Abstract:
The Twentieth Century Society's recent Architecture in Uniform symposium came at the end of the 'Art and Power' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, England. Speakers looked at the issue of whether architecture produced under the rule of Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini must necessarily be seen in a negative light. Some believed that it should not, as there are no clearly totalitarian elements in any particular form of architecture. It was felt that buildings can be appreciated simply for their architectural merit, taking into account that they have a history which goes beyond their physical form.
