Artistic achievements
Article Abstract:
Architect Louis Kahn received three commissions for art museum and gallery projects, and the Yale University Art Gallery, the Kimbell Museum of Art and the Mellon Center for British Art each show a unique approach to the combination of form, significance and technique. The Yale design is very simple, based on a four-storey block with a narrow link to the existing structure, while in the Kimbell project, Kahn's main concern was with the control of natural light. The Mellon Center project was based from the very beginning on two internal courtyards, but the design was subject to many other changes before it was finalised.
