UK selects supplier for second centre
Article Abstract:
Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management has been chosen as the supplier of the air traffic system that will be used at the New Scottish Centre located in Prestwick, UK. The awarding of the 50-million-pounds-sterling contract ($80 million) was announced by the UK Minister of Transport, Lord Macdonald, in Feb 2000. The facility, set to become operational in 2006, is expected to be fully compatible with the New En Route Centre located in Swanwick, UK.

Ferranti deal completed

Ultra Electronics Holdings has finalized its acquisition of DF Group for $60 million. The sale includes DF's subsidiaries, Ferranti Air Systems and Datel Defense. With the acquisition, Ultra will have an enhanced product portfolio and a broader sales and support network. The combined business will also be able to offer airport authorities and airlines a comprehensive systems integration capability.

Procurement strategy holds the key to project success

The completion of the air traffic control automation program at the UK's new en route center at Swanwick has suffered from delays anew as the opening was rescheduled to 2002, six years later than planned. Prime contractor Lockheed Martin has already reported cost overruns that exceed $100 million. The problem has been attributed to additional customer requiremnets and software problems.
