Cutting a deal in New Zealand
Article Abstract:
The Forestry Corporation of New Zealand (FCNZ) was privatized in 1996, raising NZ$2 billion for the government. The company, which owns around 188,00 ha of productive and well-managed forests, was acquired by New Zealand forestry group Fletcher Challenge, assisted by HSBC Investment Banking. Fletcher Challenge approached HSBC's UK-based client in 1995 about a possible joint venture to buy FCNZ but the client rejected the idea and the bank focused on potential Europe-based buyers. However, following the withdrawal of the bank's client, a new deal was arranged and the transaction was completed.
