Asean faces new challenges
Article Abstract:
Asean has expanded its membership, with the acceptance of Burma, despite Western opposition, and assumed new responsibilities. It now faces the challenges posed by both Burma and Cambodia. Burma may not cooperate with attempts to institute reforms and Asean's reputation could be tainted if Burma undertakes a further crackdown on Aung San Suu Kyi. Cambodia has requested Asean assistance, but Asean could risk the credibility of its non-interference policy.
