Asean nearing founder's vision: after 1997 Burma may be the only nonmember nation
Article Abstract:
Burma reportedly wants to join the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) by 1998, which, following the likely admission of Laos and Cambodia in 1997, would complete the 10-member group two years before the informal goal of 2000. Vietnam, the first communist country admitted, has blended into the organization more easily than expected. Like Vietnam, the three would-be members will receive a 10-year grace period to bring their tariffs into accord with ASEAN's scheme. The group has also built closer ties with China.

Burma wants to end its isolation: foreign minister says country will be more active internationally
Article Abstract:
Myanmar may wish to end its isolation, with active encouragement from many Asian nations. Foreign Minister Ohn Gyaw says that Myanmar is happy to be granted observer status by the Association of South East Asian Nations and given membership in its security group, the ASEAN Regional Forum. Western nations, however, are maintaining sanctions because of Myanmar's poor human rights stance. Myanmar in turn refuses to address either Western criticism and its own opposition groups.
