Asia revival belies Japan's supposed role as region's engine
Article Abstract:
Asian economies are posting solid growth as the pace of economic recovery picks up across the region. Surprisingly enough, the Asian recovery has taken place despite flat growth in Japan, traditionally the engine of growth in East and Southeast Asia. Observers say that the relatively strong recovery of major economies such as Taiwan and South Korea may boost Japanese growth in the near term as demand for Japanese products soars in Asia. However, observers also believe that a sharp increase in Japanese investment in Asia may be unlikely until 2001 or 2002.

U.S. group urges checkup
Article Abstract:
A group of US lawmakers is urging the government to look into the Korean Development Bank's handling of Kia Motor's auction. The group allegedly suspects that the state-owned bank is not upholding its commitment to the International Monetary Fund. KDB has committed itself to refrain from directly intervening in the Korean economy. It is also common knowledge that KDB controls about a 30% stake of the beleaguered Kia Motors. If allowed to intervene in the auction, bidding US firms may be placed in a disadvantaged position.
