Astra writes a prescription for future
Article Abstract:
Astra AB's research director, Claes Wilhelmson, has presented several changes to the company's world-wide research operations to prevent future decline of its sales. Wilhelmson anticipates that the company's overall sales will decline following the expiration of the US patent of Astra's best-selling anti-ulcer drug, Losec, in 2001. According to Wilhelmson, the changes, which include among others the separation of management of discovery from development, will enable the company to improve its productivity in terms of delivering new drugs. Wilhemson contends the new structure will allow Astra to introduce three new drugs and start clinical testing of twelve new molecules every year.

Roche Holding's net income rises 3%
Article Abstract:
Roche Holding Ltd. reaped a 3% increase in net income for the first semester ending 1998 to 2.5-billion Swiss francs which is equivalent to $1.66 billion. This is higher than the 2.43 billion francs produced in for the same period in 1997 to surpass analysts' expectations. Roche will need to reap profits solely from its operations from now on, according to analysts. Still, Roche Chief Executive Franz Humer expressed confidence about Roche's future performance. Roche Holding saw its core pharmaceutical unit improve to 7.27 billion francs for a 21% gain.
