DASA mulls buying parts of Northrop
Article Abstract:
Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG (DASA) said it is thinking of joining forces with two British defense firms as a way of acquiring some parts of US-based Northrop Grumman Corp. DASA said it is closely watching the outcome of legal moves, which are intended to prevent Northrop's merger with Lockheed Martin Corp. DASA Chairman Manfred Bischoff confirmed that DASA held talks for an alliance with British Aerospace PLC and General Electric Co. PLC, and a linkup with Northrop. He said this may be possible should the Lockheed-Northrop merger fall through.

Fairchild banks on commuter jets
Article Abstract:
Fairchild Dornier is the latest talk of the commuter-jet industry in spite of its very small small-jet market share at around 30 orders and 20 options for its new 32-seat 328JET aircraft. Industry analysts and potential customers have become impressed with the firm's aggressive plans for new projects including plans to stretch the 32-seat 328JET aircraft to 44seats. Fairchild, pending negotiations with some big carriers, is also set to introduce a new 70-seat jet in the summer of 1998 followed by 55-seat and 90-seat derivatives.

Rolls-Royce posts 16% rise in earnings
Article Abstract:
Rolls-Royce PLC's first half pretax profit rose 16% from a year earlier. The engine maker had $221 million in profits, which matched its goal of double digit earnings growth. Rolls-Royce said that its strategy of boosting market share is working based on its record order book. Analysts said that some of the profit increase was attributed to falling research and development costs, so the airline engine business profits actually fell. The company's shares fell 8.1% on analysts' fears of dwindling margins and a large cash outflow.
