Attempted suicide

Article Abstract:

More than 8 million combatants were killed in the 1914-1919 war, which began with Austria declaring war on Serbia, and Russia mobilizing against Austria. Germany, France and Britain were then drawn in, followed by the US and other countries. The reasons for the war have been debated, though there was a German fear of being encircled, while France feared German power after an invasion in 1870-1871. Austria actively sought war, and Russia did not hold back. There was a reluctance among the allies to agree to peace terms, and the Treaty of Versailles was too harsh for the defeated nations, paving the way for the 1939-1945 war.

Mass murder, rather than suicide

Article Abstract:

The deaths of cult members in Uganda appear to be due to murder rather than mass suicide. There are 330 known deaths, and there could be 500 killed in Kanungu, western Uganda. Members of the cult, the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, were thought to have killed themselves in Mar 2000, but other bodies have been discovered of people murdered several months before. There are at least 2000 children among the dead. It is unclear why the activities of the cult were not detected sooner.

Getting worse more slowly: murder

Article Abstract:

While the murder rate in most cities is still climbing, it is climbing at a slower rate than it did in previous years. However in some smaller towns, the murder rate is increasing dramatically. More often now murders are between people with trivial disputes who happen to have a gun handy.
