Bare your head
Article Abstract:
The wearing of a headscarf by a Turkish woman deputy has sparked legal action and a dispute over the influence of Islam. Merve Kavakci is a deputy for the Virtue Party which the chief prosecutor of Turkey is seeking to ban. She also faces charges of trying to incite hatred linked to differences in religion. The case has led to demonstrations, and could affect the chances of Bulent Eceveit who is seeking to set up a coalition government. He would find this easier if he could end a ban on headscarves in certain locations, but this could arouse opposition from the military.

Will Ocalan die?
Article Abstract:
Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan, has been sentenced to death by a court in Turkey, and there is some support in Turkey for the sentence to be carried out, despite international calls for leniency. Ocalan can appeal, and the sentence has to be approved by parliament. The case could also come before Europe's Court of Human Rights. There has been a shift in opinion in Turkey, and support for the execution is less strong, while Kurds may be more prepared to cooperate with the Turkish authorities.
