Austria: Austrians' increased agricultural knowledge
Article Abstract:
In Austria, rural development takes up around two thirds of the subsidies for agriculture. Additionally, 1000 new arrangements are to be made, organised by the VP farmers association, for child care. Austrians' contact with farmers and agriculture has increased since 1993, having previously been on the decline since the 1960s. A survey of 4500 people by Fessel-GfK revealed that, at the end of 2001, only 11% of people asked, knew 'very little' about farmers and agriculture, in 1993 this figure was double. Furthermore, 35% of Austrians asked, know 'a lot' about farmers and the factors in their lives. When asked, 70% thought that agriculture had changed in the last few years up to 2001. Only 3% mentioned a change in subsidies, with the primary changes in their opinions being technology and organic production.

Austria: Department of agriculture payment deferred
Article Abstract:
The Austrian Department of trade and industry will not be receiving money from the department of agriculture. The payment of Sch 500mn, which should have been transferred in the year 2001, will now be deferred to the year 2002. The department of agriculture had expected around Sch 3bn from the sale of 11 lakes to the Austrian forestry committee, but reports confirmed this figure to be in the region of Sch 800mn. As well as the planned tranche for the year 2001, a further Sch 1.5bn is scheduled to be paid to the Department of trade and industry in the year 2002.
