Austria: Changes to forestry industry
Article Abstract:
New measures are being taken to strengthen the forestry industry in Austria. More forestry committees will be formed so that foresters can pitch together to buy machinery and increase solidarity and strength in relation to saw mills, leading to lower prices. New forest laws are to be introduced early in 2002, which should decrease administration and red tape relating to temporary forest paths, and provide means for authorities to open and influence cases which they consider to be of public interest (for instance concerning protection of the natural habitat). It is also hoped that more money will be invested than in previous years, funding has sunk from Sch 346mn to Sch 264mn. The forestry economy is second behind the tourist industry in bringing in foreign revenue to Austria.
