Austria: Drug addiction trends
Article Abstract:
Drug addiction statistics in Austria show 270,000 women and 930,000 men compromise their health with a daily consumption of more than 40 grams pure alcohol (or one litre of beer or half a litre of wine) for women and 60 grams (or three quarters of a litre of wine) for men. 65,000 women and 250,000 men are considered to be alcoholics. By 13 years of age 9% of girls and 16% of boys have already been intoxicated from alcohol several times. In western Europe 13% of the total mortality rate of teenagers is ascribed to alcohol. Alcohol is not the only drug problem within teenagers, the consumption of nicotine by 25% of teenagers at the age of 12 years to 13 years results in first symptoms of addiction after only two weeks of occasional smoking, according to a German study. Out of the Austrian youngpeople, 50% at least consumed once the drug cannabis, and 6% have at least once had experience with drugs of the ecstasy type. Barbel Huber and Fery Meisterhofer, from the drug department of the Anton Proksch Institute in Vienna, point out the important role of teachers and parents in the prevention of drug addictions of children and teenagers. To strengthen the self confidence and the handling of conflicts and stress of children is said to be important points of departure in the process of prevention.
