Austria: Employment rate of elder people set to rise
Article Abstract:
The chamber of economics would like to see more older people and women in employment. The European Union intends that by 2010, 50% of people over 50 should be employed. Of countries in the European Union, Austria has the third lowest employment rate for this age group, with only 28%. Reinhold Mitterlehner, the general secretary of the chamber of economics believes it to be practical to create an 'agency for elder people'. It is being investigated how much such an agency, an equivalent of which is already in place in Great Britain and Germany, would cost. Mitterlehner believes that, even if a solution with limited liability is not possible due to a paucity of money, reforms to the job market service are necessary. Mitterlehner also wants women to be encouraged to work, by childcare and help with housework being made deductible expenses. He believes that these measures would be practical as unemployment rates are rising, but companies are looking for specialists.

AUSTRIA: UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DOWN
Article Abstract:
By December 1999 Austria's unemployment rate had fallen to 7.3% from 8.2% a year earlier. By the calculation method used by the European Union, the rate fell from 4.7% to 4.1%. The improvement is explained partly with the fact that the number of those participating in re-training schemes increased. Almost one-third of the 242,306 unemployed in December 1999 had already agreed upon a job.
