Austria: Future of AUA
Article Abstract:
According to a report from A.T.Kearney, only international airlines such as Lufthansa, British Airways or Air France will be able to survive. Smaller national carriers like AUA (Austrian Airlines) are only likely to survive if they form alliances or concentrate on niche markets. One option would be to concentrate on the domestic and European markets. In the future the AUA hopes to involve itself more with Lufthansa, and other members of the Star Alliance, such as United, which could result in passengers from the US, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar and Tokyo. AUA must try to offer a different service from its cheap competitors Ryanair and Easyjet, which are both set to expand rapidly. Moves by AUA to re-use Lauda Air for charter flights, and to act as regional provider for the big alliance partners are seen as the right way forward.

AUSTRIA: NEW NORTH AMERICAN PARTNER FOR AUA
Article Abstract:
Delta Airlines, which is ending cooperation with Swissair and Austrian Airlines (AUA) and has entered a partnership with Air France, is expected to stop flights to Vienna. The US airline is closing its city office in Vienna at the end of November 1999 and the airport counter a month later. The Austrian sales office will close at the end of March 2000. Vienna Airport is, however, trying to persuade Delta Airlines, the biggest airline in terms of passenger numbers, not to abandon the airport. Meanwhile Air Canada, AUA's partner in Star Alliance, will be represented by the Austrian carrier. Air Canada is to close its own service centre in Vienna at the end of November 1999.
