Austria: Money transfer to EU countries too expensive?
Article Abstract:
According to Austria's minister of consumer protection, Dieter Bohmdorfer, money transfer from one EU country to another is far too expensive and should be significantly lowered as soon as the euro is launched. In fact the EU commission has agreed, that money transfers between EU member states will be lowered by 1 July 2003 for amounts of EUR 12,500 and lower. For Bohmdorfer, however, this is not soon enough and he finds the amount of money that can be transferred to cheap rates too low. As he argues, someone who buys a car in another EU state will be greatly disadvantaged. Bank officials, however, find the ideas of the committed Austrian minister rather naive. Foreign partner banks also have their costs, they argue. Bohmdorfer now plans to write to the EU commissioner of health and consumer protection, David Byrne.

AUSTRIA: INTERNET FEES UNDER INVESTIGATION
Article Abstract:
Austria's Telecom Control Commission is to investigate the fees charged by Telekom Austria (TA) for internet access. Telekabel, the cable TV network operator and provider of telephone (Priority) and internet services (Chello) has requested arbitration by the Commission. The Commission is to investigate whether the fees charged by the TA subsidiary A-Online for internet access are too high. Web-surfing via A-Online costs Sch 0.18-0.53 per minute. Telekabel clients, who use Priority for telephony, cannot use the services of internet providers that use TA's networks. If TA opened its network, it would charge at least Sch 0.25 per minute, which according to Telekabel is too much.
