UK subsidies of traditional agriculture have waned, and farmers are seeking alternative ways of earning money. Many have opened their farms to the public, offering weekend countryside experiences. Others are finding that their locations are right for golf courses.

Farmers in Argentina face economic crisis because of the overall state of the economy, a lack of government assistance and historic factors which have allowed farms to decline and equipment to become outdated. A strike in early Nov 1992 had little effect.

A plan to repopulate the Kissama National Park, Angola, involves importing animals, and there is concern that they could be endangered by fighting in the civil war. There is also concern about the role of private enterprise in the project.
