Austria: Revision of trade law
Article Abstract:
Austria's economic minister, Martin Bartenstein, plans several changes in the country's trade law for 2002. According to Bartenstein's draft legislation, it should be possible in the future for all 18 year olds to take the examination for the master's craftsman diploma, no matter if they have completed an apprenticeship in this field or not. Only in jobs where health could be jeopardized an apprenticeship would still be a prerequisite before taking the exams. At the same time Austrians would be allowed to execute a profession as a master craftsman in Austria if they can prove that they had a similar position before, even if they have no (Austrian) diploma. In the past this had only been possible for other EU-citizens than Austrians themselves -an order that Austria's highest court has called incompatible with the country's constitution. Among further plans for revised trade orders, Bartenstein also intends that bankruptcy should no longer lead to a person's exclusion from the guild. In early January 2002 Bartenstein's draft legislation will be submitted to the organs involved.

Austria: Austrian business doing well
Article Abstract:
Austria is not being affected by the same depression as Germany. According to Bernhard Felderer, head of the Institute for Further Education (Institut fur Hohere Studien), this is due to the high level of Austrian exports to the German car industry, which is still running well. Another reason he gives is that Austrians do not react as much to world events and are less affected. The Austrian turnover of autumn 2001 was very high, and business is expected to be particularly good this Christmas.
