Austria: Signs of depression in children
Article Abstract:
Whilst depression is usually a description reserved for a condition from which adults suffer, similar symptoms can be seen in approximately 10% of young children and teenagers. As the symptoms are different to those in adults, a child's depression can be more difficult to spot. Once a child is over 12 years old, symptoms are more likely to become similar to those of an adult's depression. A book written by Hannelore Reicher and Christiane Nevermann, both of whom are psychologists, helps to understand this phenomenon and explains that, whilst children and teenagers may grow out of their depression, it is likely to come back if it is not dealt with properly. In this case the child involved may develop chronic depression. The symptoms for children may include disinclination to play and a disturbed appetite. In teenagers it may make them tired and irritable as well as manifesting itself in nutritional problems.
