BAA to manage Mauritius gateway
Article Abstract:
BAA PLC, an airport operator based in the UK, has forged a five-year strategic alliance with Airports of Mauritius (AML) to oversee Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, including its duty free outlets. Complementing BAA's World Duty Free (WDF) inflight deal, the alliance calls for AML to pay BAA a performance-related management fee. In a span of two years, WDF will spend 1.25 million pounds sterling for upgrading the airport's retail outlets and downtown facilities.

Hijacks are still a threat
Article Abstract:
The attempted hijacking at John F Kennedy International Airport has brought national attention again over access control at airports after the gunman was able to get past all security checkpoints and held the pilot and co-pilot hostage for several hours. A report published by the Office of the Inspector General showed that FAA agents were able to gain access to airport secure areas 40% of the times without being challenged by airport personnel and were able to board 13 aircraft.

African ATC still critically deficient
Article Abstract:
Major changes have been made to improve air traffic control in Africa. However, the International Airline Pilots Assn (IFALPA) says the improvements fail to eliminate problems such as poor radar coverage, inability to meet ICAO standards and poor communications. IFALPA adds that the region has not made significant strides to fulfill modernization programs for area airports and facilities.
