Less mania, more merging
Article Abstract:
Mergers may appear to be on the rise in Europe, as a response to the single European currency, but few European companies have been set up. Many companies that operate across Europe were either set up prior to the European Union (EU) such as Unilever, or are US companies such as Ford. Cultural barriers between European countries are often difficult to overcome, though barriers erected by governments seeking to promote domestic companies could be removed more easily. An EU company statute would permit European companies to use a single law for incorporation.

The politicians' sticky fingers
Article Abstract:
Industrial restructuring has been encouraged by the new European currency, the euro, and the single market, according to some observers, but politicians are involved in the process of restructuring. Large European companies are still smaller than large companies in the US, though the economy of the European Union (EU) is slightly bigger than that of the US. The European Commission has become involved in restructuring and has sometimes prevented cross-border mergers.
