Volvo AB intends to buy companies involved in making trucks and engines following its sale of its car interests to Ford Motor Co., for $6.45 billion. Thomson-CSF and Daimler-Chrysler Aerospace have both felt unhappy after information concerning the purchase of General Electric's Marconi holdings was released. Telecom Italia S.p.A. is the subject of a hostile bid from Ing. C. Olivetti e Compagnia A.p.A. for 52.8 billion euros. Some of the Scottish shareholders of Stakis PLC are concerned about the $2.4 billion bid from Ladbroke Group PLC.

Compass sells Le Meridien hotels
Article Abstract:
The catering company Compass sold its hotel chain, Le Meridien, in May 2001 to Nomura's Principal Finance Group. The hotel operator Marriott International were in the running, but Nomura's bid of 1.9 billion pounds sterling was too much.

Whitbread's pubs on the block
Article Abstract:
Morgan Grenfell Private Equity (MGPE) has bought the Whitbread pub group and is now looking for a buyer for some of the pubs. It is suggested that MGPE will also sell off some of the other chains within the group.
