Francisco Arias Cardenas has emerged as a presidential candidate in Venezuela and he is gathering support. He previously supported President Hugo Chavez. Chavez is popular among the poor in Venezuela and has been able to use public spending to alleviate recession, due to high petroleum prices.

Marcos Perez Jimenez

Former Venezuelan dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez, who has died at the age of 87, was an old-fashioned dictator who some claim was a man of vision. Perez was jailed for corruption, but supporters prefer to remember his legacy of architectural triumphs including the Humboldt hotel.
