BELGIUM: DELHAIZE GROUP'S GOALS

Delhaize, the Belgian retailer, intends to continue its development in the United States, Europe, and in Asia. According to Pierre-Olivier Beckers, the new managing director and chairman of the board of directors, it is going to invest Eur 500mn in 1999. The group expects to generate about 20% of the consolidated turnover outside of Belgium and the United States, its principal markets, in 2002. It expects to open 500 new supermarkets, particularly 100 in the Czech Republic, 100 in Greece, 90 in France, between 50 and 100 in Thailand, at least 50 in Indonesia, and at least 40 at Singapore. The group plans to open around 20 new affiliated supermarkets in Belgium and two integrated units in 1999. Delhaize is not ruling out the possibility of making an alliance or an acquisition if a good project and good terms present themselves.

FRANCE: MIDAS HAS STRONG AMBITIONS
Article Abstract:
With the aim of reporting a FFr 1.250bn turnover in 1999 from FFr 1.1bn in 1998, French car repair centre network Midas, plans to open some 30 new outlets in 1999. In 1998, Midas opened 19 franchised outlets and one branch. Midas, which is now controlled by Magnetti Marelli (Fiat) expects to partly base its development on Fiat's network. Franchised contracts will be proposed to Fiat's dealers in France. Midas's franchised outlets and Fiat's dealers will remain independent and will work in separate premises but the dealer will be offered to bring capital to set up a new Midas outlet.
