BELGIUM: GIB GROUP'S RESULTS IN 1999
Article Abstract:
GIB Groupe made a 1999 consolidated turnover of EUR 5.1bn, up 1.5% from 1998, and group share net earnings of EUR 42.3mn, compared with a EUR 66.3mn deficit in 1998. This weak rise in turnover is due to the poor performance of GIB, the supermarkets and hypermarkets branch of GIB Group. Despite the restructuring begun in 1993, GB made a tax-inclusive turnover of BFr 164, up 1.4% for a deficit of EUR 20.5mn in its operating income, compared with a loss of EUR 11.2mn in 1998. The doubled deficit is due mainly to the aggressiveness on prices, costs due to the reorganisation of GB by businesses, and the implementation of the Super GB Partner plan. The turnover for the hypermarkets branch rose 3.2% in 1999, while supermarket activity posted a 4.1% drop in sales, and a tax-inclusive turnover which dropped 1.7%. GB plans to invest EUR 93mn in 2000 in order to continue renovating the Maxi GB stores and to convert franchised stores. The GIB Group's other operations did better in 1999. The Quick fast-food chain posted a 5.5% rise in sales, and the turnover from the DIY branch came to EUR 777.2mn, up 9.6%.
