BK SYNGAL TAKES OVER AS RELIANCE TELECOM CHIEF

Mr BK Syngal has assumed charge as the chairman of Reliance Telecom. Mr Syngal was formerly the chairman and managing director of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Mr Syngal is the first non- family member to be appointed as chairman by the Ambanis, the promoters of Reliance Telecom. Reliance Telecom has licences in seven circles covering 13 states. It offers mobile services in 23 cities in seven states. Mr Syngal is the recipient of several awards like Telecom Man of the Decade from Wisitex Foundation and International Excellence Award from the International Economic Forum. (vv)

THREE ESCORT UNITS BLEED; REVAMP PLAN AT FULL STEAM

The 3 subsidiaries of Escorts Limited - Escotel Mobile Communications (EMC), Escorts Construction Equipment (ECE) and Escorts Communications (EC) - incurred losses during 1997-98. EMC posted a loss of Rs114.87 crore, ECE Rs4.40 crore and EC Rs5.47 crore. The Escorts group is chalking out a restructuring plan for EC, a telecom equipment producer, as its losses are more than the paid- up capital. EC proposes to reduce its expenditure and start new business operations with local and global wireless producers. (ag)

BHARTI TELENET RINGS IN INDIA'S FIRST PRIVATE STD SERVICE
Article Abstract:
Bharti Telenet (BT) has become the first private operator to offer STD service in India. It launched the AirTel Telephone Service (ATS) on October 9, 1998, in Bhopal. ATS has expanded its services in Bhopal and Mandideep. It is to invest Rs4,000 crore in the next 15 years to spread its service to cover the entire Madhya Pradesh. BT has invested Rs280 crore in Madhya Pradesh. ATS will have an initial capacity of 2.25 lakh lines with an investment of Rs800 crore for covering 800 towns and cities in Madhya Pradesh. (gs)
